June 30th, 2008 - Capt. John Watts Finally Hangs Up His Wings

On May 30, 2008 I flew my last flight as an AA Captain. I wanted to make this last landing the best ever and to make a PA that recognized all the people who have helped make each and every flight possible.

Well, the landing left no doubt that we had arrived at DFW, and I was unable to get through the PA I wanted to make. So I’ve submitted this note, hoping you’ll bear with me as I try to express my feelings.

To paraphrase FAR part 121 the Captain is ultimately responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft. Being a simple guy, I read this to mean; on any given flight, I must have the big picture. Throughout my career’s quest for the “big picture” I’ve seen first hand the many pieces that go into making a flight work.

I say thanks to the Crew Schedulers & Trackers who put the pieces back together time and time again. I tip my hat to the Dispatchers, who somehow saw and provided what was needed. I salute the Clerks on the ramp who braved the extremes of weather and tight schedules.

I’m forever indebted to the countless AMTs (mechanics) who’ve somehow made sense of all the wires, lines and magic boxes, keeping us out of harm’s way. I equally thank all the Agents who over the years have somehow managed to smile, even when things weren’t going as planned for our crews or the passengers.

I’ll of course never forget all our professional Flight Attendants, who have demonstrated the ability to handle whatever might be required. They deliver it all, from the simplest fresh coffee to help keep me awake, to emergency situations where they’ve truly saved the day.

I close with my gratitude to all my fellow First Officers. It’s truly been my pleasure. You’ve provided advice and council when things didn’t go as planned. I proudly leave the profession with you, and all that have come before.

To these and all others behind the scenes – some of which I may not even know, who made my job better, I say thanks. You will always have my unending respect and gratitude. Captain John Watts – DFW
