If you've traveled with us in the past you know that we are like one big family getting together each year for a wonderful vacation, be it in the Mountains of Switzerland, Austria, Italy or Spain; in some far off country like Andorra or at our favourite 12th. Century 'Castel Porrona' tucked away in the middle of the vineyards of Tuscany. If you don't know anyone on arrival, it's a given that you will discover some people within hours who may become your lifelong 'new' friends.
As in all families life has a nasty way of stepping in and changing our plans. Our friend, Gary Meana from La Jolla, CA., who skied with us in Katschberg, Austria in 2004 was taken from us a short while ago. Gary was the kind of guy you never forget - always smiling, always charming, and always surrounded by a large circle of friends - many of whom joined us on our trip.
More recently, we lost our dear friend, Reg Brown. For anybody who was not aware of the circumstances - Reg was working out with his son Daniel (no doubt he was getting in shape for our upcoming ski tour to Switzerland!) when he suffered a fatal aneurism. When he and his wife, Pam arrived on one of our trips , you just knew everyone was going to enjoy the week. We first met Reg in Andorra, a little country squeezed between France and Spain, and from then on he was a regular on the trips. Apres ski parties will never be the same without him. We would always gather at some Café in the middle of the mountains where he, and of course his sidekick, John (Watts/ AA-Tucson) would have a tray of drinks awaiting us!! Reg was a lawyer by profession AND we found out later (he would never have told us) a Knight in the order of St. John… imagine Sir Reginald!! Before he boarded the flight in YYT the Law books were put away… he came to relax and enjoy himself and, by God, Pam, John, Lindy and the rest of us made sure he wouldn't be disappointed. Reg would be the one taking the load off your shoulders, if you were having trouble climbing up to the tram, or you would see him, (and we would razz him over this,) on his knees buckling up Pam's (and anyone else's) ski boots. A Knight? On his knees?. He would help 'beginners' feel more comfortable by assisting them and even doing some runs with them -eh Lindy??
Not only did Reg Ski with us, but he and Pam accompanied us on our many trips to Castel Porrona in Tuscany, always bringing along some new friends. He never once complained if things didn't go as planned. He understood the language barrier and made it easy to rectify these small things by helping others understand. Our hearts and prayers remain with his wife Pam, and their two children, Daniel. Johanna and the rest of the family.
With this in mind and in my conversations with Pam, John W, Leslie Smith and others, we decided to dedicate our April Spring Ski trip to Banff/Lake Louise, in celebration of their lives. We will hold our 1st. Annual Reg Brown 'fun' ski races at Mt. Norquay during this trip, and the emphasis will be on 'FUN'. Everyone is invited to compete and there will be medals and prizes for the top times- if you miss a gate, who cares? If you fall, Reg will be there to pick you up!! We're just gonna have some fun fun fun!! Please plan on joining us in the Canadian Rockies!
